HAUTE DOGS!

Yesterday I attended my first Haute Dog Howl'oween Parade in Long Beach. I'm a huge dog lover, so being surrounded by cute dogs all day was quite a treat. Here are some of my favorite shots from the day. The entire set of photos can be viewed on my Flickr page.

ADOPT THIS SWEETIE!

This is Mia and she really tugged at my heart and got under my skin. I'm not looking to adopt another dog - Lucy The Boxador as an only child is enough for me right now - but Mia was just so sweet and memorable and I really wanted to give her a shout out so she has a higher possibility of being adopted. When I walked over to the little enclosure she was in with three other dogs, the other dogs were all snoozing but Mia immediately stood on her hind legs to get up closer to me and was ready to get my attention and affection. But at the same time, she was completely calm/submissive about it - a really great trait for any dog - just ask Cesar Millan. She definitely is a dog of the ugly/cute variety and she just had such a wonderful disposition and personality and really deserves a forever home.

Through a little investigation, I found a link to the rescue group that has Mia. Here is their description of her and contact info:

"Mia came from a high kill shelter and her sweet demeanor kept her alive long after her due date. She loves to cuddle and likes to be held like a baby, which she really is. She is crate trained and house broken and knows all her house manners. She came with fingernail polish on one toe so she was used to being pampered. The cute face, with the very loving eyes and obvious underbite will make you smile every time you look at her. Mia is a little timid in new situations, but quickly begins to feel more comfortable and then her loving personality comes out & she grabs your heart. She would be a great family member and gets along with other dogs, people and older children. Be prepared to want to hold her the first time you see her! She will stretch up so she can reach your arms. Who wouldn't want to love this sweetie? THE MAGICAL WIENERMOBILE

"Oh, I'd love to be an Oscar Mayer wiener.
That is what I'd truly like to be.
'Cause if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener,
Everyone would be in love with me.
Oh, I'm glad I'm not an Oscar Mayer wiener.
That is what I'd never want to be.
Cause if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener.
There would soon be nothing left of me!"

Last Thursday while driving down Fallbrook in Woodland Hills to go to the Laemmle to see "Appaloosa" with S, I spotted the Weinermobile in the Fallbrook Mall parking lot. This is only the second time I've seen the Weinermobile and unfortunately BOTH times I was running late to my destination. My first one I had to take off a shot from my car, and this time, I only had a couple minutes to spare before getting to the movie. DRAT. Luckily I had my Sony T100 in the car, did a mad dash to take a couple shots, pose as an Oscar Meyer weiner, grab the coupons, sticker, and free Weinermobile shaped whistle they were handing out, poke my head inside to see the interior, and scurry over to the theater to see the movie. I'm so lucky I got to see this unique piece of Americana again, I just wish I could have savored the Weinermobile a little longer.

Me & S get our mustard on!

Me posed next to the big Weinermobile.

HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS

On Wednesday night I met up with my friend Andrea James to go to dinner at the wonderful shabu shabu restaurant Koji's at the Hollywood & Highland complex. Andrea is as big a shutterbug as I am so of course she had her camera with her. I on the other hand left all my good Nikon gear at home and my little Sony T100 in the car. So at sunset when the sky turned aqua blue with incredible pink clouds, I urged her to put down her chopsticks and go outside and grab what shots she could.

Later in the evening we ended up strolling on Hollywood Boulevard taking in all the neon and kitsch scenery. Unlike tourists who think of Hollywood as a magical place, I grew up here and pretty much do whatever I can to avoid the area. Now that Hollywood is getting gentrified, it's not so bad, and there are actually a lot of beautiful restored theaters (The Egyptian and El Capitan) and wonderful neon marquees (Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and its Cinegrill sign).

But even with the nice cleaned up touches, to me Hollywood in general is schlocky, seedy, and kind of grimy. Although tourists flock to see the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Grauman's Chinese Theater with its world famous cement footprints and handprints of the stars - as a local, these things have never been a big deal to me. So when Andrea asked me if I'd like to have a photo taken in front of one of the celebrity cement blocks in front of Grauman's I thought, "Why not, let's have some fun with this."

The first handprints and footprints we spotted belonged to Judy Garland. Her footprints were so tiny they looked like they belonged to a child. I have big honkin' feet so I figured I better start looking for some guy's footprints. To add to the kitsch factor, the one's that fit me the best belonged not to a real actor but a movie character - Darth Vader!

I found that my hands were pretty close in size to Julie Andrews (a lifelong fave of mine). Putting my hand in the cement handprint and posing towards the camera felt and looked like a game of Twister! Now I was really getting into the fun of Grauman's!

Later I noticed Olivia Newton-John's Hollywood Walk of Fame star and Andrea did a nice play on perspective with this super high angle shot.

Hollywood Boulevard turned out to be a great place for photography including Andrea's portrait of us in the reflection of the "Ask The Brain" booth in front of Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum.

So even though I didn't bring my camera along, Andrea took some great shots for the BOTH of us. :-)

The full set of Andrea's Hollywood photos can be seen on her Flickr page.

Andrea also has a great blog called Andrea James: Shared Experiences full of her photography. I subscribe to it in my google reader so I never miss an entry.

NATURE INSPIRES US ALL

These Polaroids were taken just minutes apart and represent natural and manmade things but I am struck by how much they are similar and interconnected.

The flower shaped hubcap was seen in the parking lot at Apollo XI Field, home of the Valley Flyers where people fly radio controlled model airplanes and helicopters. It belonged to a late 1970's / early 1980's model Chevy Malibu station wagon. The wildflowers were spotted growing out of an empty field adjacent to the driveway.

No matter how much we evolve, nature (wild and free) is always there for our inspiration.

DOUBLE HEADER

Sunday I had a big day. First I went to the Every Woman For Obama rally at UCLA, then to Valley Pride at the CBS Studio Center in Studio City.

I haven't decided whom I'm voting for yet (I really don't like ANY of the choices), so my reason for going to the Obama rally wasn't as a supporter but to see a free show that included two of my favorites stumping for Obama: Chelsea Handler and the rock band Heart. Also, I knew it would be a great opportunity for photos.

Heart played three songs: a cover of Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changing"; and two of their own hits "These Dreams" and "Barracuda," the latter Heart proclaimed they were "taking back" from the Republicans who had used it as Sarah Palin's theme without permission. Ann Wilson may be older and overweight but man can she STILL belt out her hits. I was really impressed. Patti La Belle also performed. Although I missed seeing her because I got there about a half hour into the event, I could still hear her distinct singing voice trailing outside the venue as I got near the door. I did get to see Jean Smart and Roseanna Arquette who made little speeches. Twelve year old performer Jamia Nash, the lead vocalist on the song "Raise It Up", which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song from the movie August Rush, also sang and the little girl has a HUGE voice. She sang a stirring version of "America The Beautiful."

With the rally over around 3pm, unfortunately I only got to spend less than two hours at Valley Pride before it ended. The theme this year was gay marriage and boy there were a LOT of booths open that focused on the "business" of marriage. Photographers, limos, flower arrangers, decorators, ordained ministers - they were ALL there.

Here are some photos from my busy Sunday!

Every Woman For Obama:

The Obama rally was held at Pauly Pavilion on the UCLA campus. I was surprised how low the turnout was. The intention of the rally was to get voter registration and I guess drum up interest in Obama for women voters. I only found out about it the day before because Chelsea Handler announced it on her E show "Chelsea Lately." I guess it wasn't well promoted.

Chelsea Handler was funny as usual and man is she in shape! She's got a killer bod despite all the vodka.

This was my favorite sign from the rally.

I love this woman's intensity. And her sign is pretty cool too.

This Soccer Mama for Obama sign was my second favorite.
